For Spanish tile a 1x? with mounting flashing attached is used for the hip nailer which should be of sufficient height (depending on pitch) to nail hip trim. 4. 1x? with mounting flashing attached is used for the ridge nailers or ridge venting at the ridges to fasten the ridge trim. C. FLASHINGS
D. SEALANT, MORTAR, GROUT, ADHESIVE

F. SNOW GUARDS/SNOW FENCE 1. Snow guards/snow fence for snow areas shall be 38 oz. copper. PART 3--EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Check rafters, trusses and roof deck for humps, dips and loading capacity. A minimum 5/8" deck is required for rafters/trusses 24" O.C. Install decking at hips to allow for 1" flat surface for installing the hip nailer and at the ridge for 1 1/2" opening if ridge venting is to be installed. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Roof deck should be clean, smooth and dry when underlayment is applied. B. Coordinate installation with flashing, gutters, vents, skylights and other adjoining Work to ensure proper sequencing. Do not install roofing materials until all vent stacks and other penetrations through roof sheathing have been installed and are securely fastened against movement. When tile vents are used they have to be installed prior to cutting the penetrations. 3.3 INSTALLATION A. Comply with manufacturer's installation instructions and recommendations, but not less than recommended by "The NRCA Steep Roofing Manual" and local code requirements. B. Eave fascia and plywood eave blocking shall extend above roof deck to ensure proper cant for bottom row of tile. For pitches 4:12 and above use 9-1/2" wide blocking. For pitches below 4:12 use the 12" wide blocking. For Spanish tile eave fascia is level with the roof deck so blocking is not used. C. Install eave metal. D. Install 24" standing seam, double rib (for closed valleys) or 24" double rib valley flashing (for open grouted valleys) lapped a minimum of 4" over 36" full width vertical felt strip for all valley areas. At least one layer of felt shall be applied under all flashing For pitches below 4:12 lap flashing 6" and install a 3'wide strip of ice and water shield or flashing material sealed to each side of the valley flashing before the horizontal underlayment is installed. For Spanish tile install 28" standing seam, double rib (for closed valleys) or 24" double rib valley flashing (for open grouted valleys). E. Install sidewall flashing at sidewalls and at sides of chimneys that have no saddles. A vapor barrier extending over the flashing should be used behind the siding. A 12" strip of ice and water shield extending 3" up the sidewall should be installed under the flashing. F. At lower sides of dormers, chimneys and other walls, extend angle flashing at least 3" up walls and 3" over tile with 1/2" hem. A 12" strip of ice and water shield extending 3" up the angle should be installed under the flashing. Install Riviera closures with Riviera tile and ridge closures with Spanish tile. Counter flash as necessary. G. Chimneys and other roof protrusions over 30" require a framed saddle (cricket) with a maximum ridge length of 24". Saddle flashing must extend a minimum of 12" up the roof and 31/2" up the back of the chimney. Thoroughly counter flash as necessary. For protrusions less than 30" wide a flat saddle flashing that extends a minimum of 6" up the vertical and 18" up the slope is used. H. All counter flashing is to be plugged, pointed and made secure. I. Apply no less than one layer of 43# felt with standard 3-3/4" lap laid parallel to eaves and ridge. Nail all horizontal seams one inch from the edge with7/8" large head galvanized nails 4"-8" O.C., i.e. 4:12=4" O.C.; 6:12=6" O.C.; 8:12 and above=8" O.C. Lap all vertical seams a minimum of 6", seal with sealant and nail all vertical seams 3" O.C. Extend felt 1/4" over lower edge of eave metal, to within 1 inch of outside valley rib and sealed to the metal, 4 inches up side walls and 6 inches over ridges and hips, thereby providing a double layer on ridges and hips. The roof deck shall be clean, smooth and dry when felt is applied. J. On pitches below 4:12 substitute.060 EPDM or ice and water shield (for summer installations) or torch applied modified bitumen (for winter installations) in place of the 43# felt. K. Lay out roof as follows: first, install ridge nailer/vent. Next strike lines centered on each hip if applicable. Then strike the horizontal line for the top edge of first batten 13-1/4" for flat and 12-1/4" for Riviera above the eave to ensure proper fit of the bottom row of tile. Next, strike the horizontal line for the top edge of the last batten so the field tile butts the ridge nailer (approximately 1" below). Then divide the distance between these two lines into equal increments not to exceed 12 inches and strike lines for the top edges of the battens. For Spanish tile strike a horizontal line for the top edge of the first batten 15" above the eave to ensure proper fit of the eave closure and the bottom row of tile. Next strike the horizontal line for the top edge of the last batten so the field tile butts the ridge nailer (approximately 1-1/4" below). Then divide the distance between these two lines into equal increments not to exceed 14 inches and strike lines for the top edges of the battens. L. Install horizontal 1"x2"x8' batten strips equally spaced (12" maximum). For Spanish tile install horizontal batten strips equally spaced (14" maximum). Use pressure treated battens with notches or ports 16" O.C. and fasten with 18 fasteners for pitches 4:12 and above. Use pressure treated 1 "x 2"x 6' battens with notches or ports 8" 0. C. installed with 14 fasteners on pitches 3:12 to 4:12. M. Stack tile on roof selecting them randomly from several pallets to ensure an even color blend or order them pre-blended from the factory. N. Tile should be laid from right to left for Flat tile (as viewed facing the ridge). For Riviera, tile should be laid from left to right. For Spanish tile should be laid from right to left as viewed facing the ridge. 0. Fasten tile as they are installed on the battens. Fastening requirements are determined by the pitch of the roof and prevailing wind conditions. See Figure 1 for Flat and Riviera tile. See Figure 2 for Spanish tile. P. Rake trim shall be installed as tile are laid along gable edge. Trowel sealant on the underside of the rake trim and secure the side with two copper R/S nails or noncorrosive screws. Q. Ridge trim shall be installed as roof progresses. Install an end cap where gables meet ridge. R. Hip starters and hip trim shall be laid as hip tile are cut and secured in place. S. All hip, ridge and ridge end cap trim shall be nailed and shall be lapped in sealant. T. Specifications for tile in heavy snow areas
