There is a number of testing and certification organizations that serve manufacturers of bullet, blast and forced entry resistant products. Underwriters Laboratories, or UL® is one of the more recognizable entities that tests as well as certifies bullet resistant products under the classification of “752 Standard for Bullet-Resisting Equipment. “The UL 752 standard encompasses eight different levels (Levels 1-8). Level 1 includes medium power small arms whereas Level 8 addresses high power rifle. The UL standards are very specific concerning the caliber of the firearm, type and weight of the bullet, the velocity of the bullet and the number of shots at the target. Distance from the muzzle of the gun to the target is also specified. UL standards are usually referenced in specifications used in commercial construction. Government organizations will often refer to other standards for defining bullet or blast resistant requirements.
Another organization that tests and certifies bullet resistant or ballistic resistant materials is the National Institute of Justice or NIJ. The NIJ is part of the U.S. Department of Justice and has six primary classifications: Type 1, Type II-A, Type II, Type III-A, Type III and Type IV. Type 1 includes low power handguns and Type IV is for high powered rifles with armor piercing ammunition. Similar to UL specifications, NIJ specifies the caliber of the firearm, type and weight of the bullet, the acceptable velocity range and number of shots fired at the target.
NIJ specifications are most often encountered with government projects. The standards are similar to Underwriters Labs but not identical.
There are numerous other certification organizations that test and certify physical security products such as doors, windows and ballistic panels. NIJ and UL are two of the more well known groups that provide this service.
