Case Study: Sporting Complex, New York

The Project

This new lodge at an extreme outdoor sporting complex replaced a 1980s dilapidated building that was demolished to build this modern, energy efficient 57,000 square foot resort. The building includes a 500-foot indoor bobsled track and is open to the public 365 days a year.

The owners wanted to receive a certain R-value on this new building, achieving a final R-value of 24. Representatives from Kingspan had recently visited the architectural firm and presented the values of Kooltherm, and it checked all the boxes for this project.

Highlights:
  • 57,000 square foot building features Kingspan Kooltherm® K12 Framing Board on the entire building envelope (36,000 SF)
  • Multi-million project designed in two months, built in one year.
  • RFP asked for high thermal wall and Kingspan’s Kooltherm K12 delivered what they needed.

Although some of the team members had used Kingspan products before, this was the first time the team had ever used Kooltherm K12, and they called it a win. They needed a high thermal wall to give them a high R-value, minimizing the foundation, and knowing the exterior envelope was going to shrink.

Kingspan Kooltherm K12 won the RFP because of its premium performance insulation properties, with an R-value of 16 on 2 inch, which is a higher R–value per inch than any commonly used insulation. Kooltherm K12 has a fiber–free rigid thermoset phenolic insulation core faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil facing, which is used in wood or steel frame walls. This three-story building has a steel frame and fiber cement cladding.

Kooltherm K12 is resistant to the passage of water vapor, resisting moisture penetrations, and is unaffected by air infiltration. It can be used between studs or as an insulating sheathing, has passed numerous NFPA 285 tests, and has an ASTM E 84 rating of 25/20 (flame-smoke). K12 is already NFPA 285 approved with the specified fibre cement panel, making it easier for the architect to specify Kooltherm K12.

Kooltherm K12 has a higher compressive strength that allows applicators to put the attachment system (rails) over the insulation instead of breaking up the insulation, which reduces thermal bridging and keeps the wall system as efficient as possible. This is very important when the inside conditions need to be kept to a controlled temperature.

Outcome

According to team members, there was good communication throughout the process between the plant, Kingspan representative and distributor, and the customer avoided any potential issues with extended lead times. It was easy to specify, handle, and install – no different than installing polystyrene, and achieving a much better R-value outcome.

Where there once was a run-down lodge as a focal point at an outdoor sporting complex, there is now an attractive, energy efficient building in the heart of the beautiful center.
