So you have an ugly popcorn ceiling and are searching for ways to cover it up without having to scrape it because you know how messy that gets. There are some other ways to cover a popcorn ceiling but if you are looking for the most affordable, easiest and fastest way to do so than I trully believe that you will not find anything better than covering your ugly popcorn ceiling with our Styrofoam Ceiling Tiles. Because I have done this myself and learned few things about the installation over popcorn I decided to share them with you so that you don't have to make the same mistakes I have done.
Things you need to know about your popcorn ceiling before you start the installation!
- Does your Popcorn have asbestos? (Houses before 1970, used to have asbestos in their popcorn ceilings and if your house was built before then, chances are that you have asbestos in it. In paint stores they sell kits that can help you determine asbestos presence. If you have asbestos, it is good to have it removed by professionals.
- Is your popcorn strong enough to hold the tiles? (Some popcorn ceilings may be very unstable and the best way to find it is to push on it with your finger and see what happens. If it is falling apart, you have to remove it and get rid of the dust that will be left over. If it is strong and stable, you can start your installation.
How many 20x20 Styrofoam Ceiling Tiles will you need to cover your ceiling?
It is in your best interest to figure out the ammount needed before you do any ordering. It is actually very simple to do... Let's say you have a square room 10 ft x 10 ft. To get the square footage you have to multiply the lenght and the widht. In this example it will be 10x10=100
This is the number you need to enter in our project calculator below and hit calculate:

In our example we are calculating number of tiles for a 10 x 10 foot room and so we have added 100 into the calculator. The result is 43 tiles. 43 tiles includes 6 extra tiles (15% overage) which in our experiance works the best for these types of installations.
At this point you should be sure that your popcorn ceiling its stable and you know how many tiles you will need to cover it. Video below explains step by step how to install our Styrofoam Ceiling Tiles and what tools will be needed. I retallaalize that the video does not show installation over popcorn but we have covered all the points above and so from this point on the installation is very much the same.
