How to Make Your Commercial Planters Last Longer
January 8, 2020
Investing in commercial planters is no small undertaking, and so the goal is always to get planters to last as long as possible. First and foremost, buying the right planters made from long lasting materials will make a huge difference in how long your planters last. In this article, we will go over the best material for planters that outlive the competition, as well as things you can do to make just about any commercial planter last longer.
Materials Matter – Long Lasting Commercial Planters by TerraCast®
We’ve been manufacturing some of the longest lasting planters in the industry, right here in the USA, since 1984. Our specialized materials and manufacturing processes have proven indestructible time and time again. There’s good reason so many large-scale projects rely on TerraCast Planters, including Times Square in New York City.
Our resin-based material is not a fancy word for ordinary plastic. Instead, it is a true composite blend that we rotationally mold into incredibly strong and flexible products. Our product begins as a Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), a powder resin blend that is liquefied at super high temperatures and carefully cooked as it rotates and cooling into its shape in the mold.
As a result of this very specific process, our planters maintain a much more durable form and have greater elasticity to prevent cracks and breaks – even if you hit them with a baseball bat or throw them off a building.
Our unique resin-based planters are resistant to stains and water damage because they are non-porous and non-hydroscopic. This keeps the elements outside, where they belong, while helping to prevent rust, graffiti, leaks and discoloration. In addition, all planters are blended with UV-12 inhibitors to help uphold their vibrant colors.
Additional benefits:
- Our planters can imitate the look of stone and metal materials for a fraction of the cost.
- Maintenance free
- Lightweight – easy to move and more affordable to ship on-site
- Easy to clean – even graffiti is easy to remove
- Ability to customize
3 Tips to Make Commercial Planters Last Longer
From stone planters to a flimsy plastic planter picked up at your local hardware store, there are a variety of things you can do to make all planters last longer. Of course, the following precautions aren’t really necessary when you are dealing with our incredibly durable planters (just saying!).
1. Keep Planters Out of Freezing Cold Temperatures
TerraCast® Planters can handle a much wider range of temperatures than just about any other planter. They can easily survive in -40 degrees and up to 140+ degrees, but this isn’t the case for most planters. That’s why it’s important to bring in most planters during the coldest months of the year, especially if you live in a climate with extreme winters. Or at the very least, wrap planters in blankets or some type of protective coating.
2. Don’t Put Planters in Direct Sunlight
As mentioned above, all of our planters include UV inhibitors to help protect their vibrant colors. Yet, most planters are prone to fading rather quickly if left in direct sunlight all day long. This is not the case with TerraCast® planters.
3. Add a Protective Coating to Wood Planters
Once again, this doesn’t apply to TerraCast® Planters, as they are naturally designed to withstand a variety of elements. Wood planters in particular often require a protective coating of some sort and are rarely treated with the proper coatings when you buy them at the store. In addition, wood planter boxes are often pieced together with glue, which will break down over time. You could add galvanized screws to reinforce the box, as well as apply a safe protective coating to the exterior to greatly increase the lifespan of wood planters.
Which Planters Last the Least Amount of Time?
- Concrete planters
- Stone planters
- Wood planters
- Cheap plastic planters
Planters made from cheap and flimsy plastic tend to crack and break, and the same often goes for heavy concrete and stone planters. Any planter made from a non-pliable material will be prone to cracking and breaking, especially after being exposed to cold temperatures or water damage. Planters that readily absorb water and stains will not last as long either, as these elements can damage planters beyond repair.
