Hurd Windows & Doors Wins 2010 Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year Award

Hurd Windows & Doors was named a 2010 Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year (WMOTY) award winner. The company is one of only seven Wisconsin companies who won one of this year's prestigious awards, competing against 53 total nominees. Nominated by the Medford Area Chamber Commerce, Hurd was given a special award for their "Local to Global Commitment." The winners were revealed during a black tie banquet Thursday, February 24, 2011 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, at which Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker was scheduled to serve as the keynote speaker.

Among other reasons, Hurd was recognized for its consistent commitment to buying locally. This longstanding policy has had a positive economic impact on Wisconsin and according to the nomination, has created and maintained countless jobs in the state. "Hurd has committed a record level of capital investment in a year where the residential housing market remains significantly depressed," said Medford Area Chamber Commerce President Director Sue Emmerich. "This is a sign of Hurd's aggressive management and optimism for growth of the wood window market."

Hurd was singled out for leveraging its global position in the wood window market into positive overall growth. Hurd President and CEO Dominic Truniger said, "We feel especially honored by this recognition. The window and door market has experienced some significant changes in the last few years. We have worked to grow new relationships with new distributors both in the U.S. and internationally. In fact, 16 percent of Hurd's sales came from the international marketplace in 2010 - whereas the industry average is 2.7 percent. Overall, we've increased our international sales by 30 percent since 2009."

The judges lauded Hurd for developing an innovative product mix for customers interested in remodeling their homes rather than building new during the recent economic downturn. Citing Hurd's strong belief in buying locally and selling globally, it is estimated that Hurd's purchases from other Wisconsin companies exceeded $8 million in 2010 alone.

Hurd Director of Supply Chain Management Jeff Herman said, "Over the 91 year history of the brand, Hurd has committed itself to making as many local purchases as possible for raw materials. In addition to creating a significant number of local jobs, buying from other Wisconsin companies is part of our commitment to support and invest in the social fabric of our community."

Celebrating its 23rd year, the WMOTY program recognizes manufacturers of all sizes and industries for their contributions to the great state of Wisconsin. Other awards went to Atlas Resin Proppants, Briess Industries, Dickten Masch Plastics, GE Healthcare Imaging Subsystems, Hydro-Thermal Corp., and Plexus Corp. The WMOTY award winners were selected by an independent panel of judges. The accounting and advisory firm of Baker Tilly, the law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, and the business association Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce sponsor the MOTY awards program.
