The Heritage Wharf cruise ship pier at Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard, one of two dock areas at the Dockyard, urgently needed repairs to damage caused by erosion. At the same time, the pier needed to be expanded to better accommodate large cruise ships, most notably, the Norwegian Cruise Line’s 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway. This ship was the largest cruise ship ever to regularly sail to Bermuda and scheduled to first arrive in Spring 2013.
“At the start of the project, there was concern that the modifications and repairs to the Heritage Wharf would not be done in time because the erosion and other damage to the wharf turned out to be much more serious than previously reported,” explains Bill Morrison, CEO of SAL, the PENETRON representative in Bermuda. “The cruise ship season is extremely important to Bermuda and the spring arrival of the Norwegian Breakaway, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, was seen as a key sign that the island was ready for the cruise season.”
Bulks Up the Pier
Renovation of the Heritage Wharf included noise mitigation equipment, new pilings and concrete work. Additional ship mooring and berthing slips for larger and heavier vessels were also constructed. The pier can now accommodate larger ships of up to 1,100 feet in length (the giant Norwegian Breakaway measures 1,062 feet in length).
was used (together with a corrosion inhibitor) in the reinforced concrete marine structures of the wharf, and also to protect the non-galvanized reinforcements. A primary concern was the performance of the PENETRON ADMIX in the 40 MPa strength granite aggregate concrete; the results were flawless.
“We’re happy to report that the Norwegian Breakaway, a record-breaking mega-ship, glided into Bermuda harbor and docked at the multi-million dollar renovated pier without mishap or delay on May 15, 2013,” reports Robert Revera, President and CEO of The PENETRON Group. “The cruise season kicked off right on time!”
The success of the Heritage Wharf project resulted in the problem-free docking of numerous mega-ships at Heritage Wharf throughout the summer of 2013.
