Self-Watering Planters from TerraCast

One of the primary general concerns for planters is the maintenance and care of the flora planted in them, especially for commercial customers like municipalities, shopping centers, parks, or plazas.

Innovation

The most obvious solution is to find a way to make the planters self-watering. In recent years, the demand for self-watering planters has skyrocketed, so TerraCast® has created a self-watering system for our planter pots.

Design

Designed as a separate piece, what we’re offering is a perfectly fitted, additional piece that fits onto the bottom of any TerraCast® planter. Even if you’ve had your resin planters installed for years, you can install the self-watering system onto your existing planters to convert them.

It’s a secondary bottom that fits underneath the bottom of your actual planter, creating a water reservoir.

Defy

Our self-watering planters use a moisture-wicking system, which effectively defies gravity by drawing water up from below. It has a stem tube that acts like a big wick, bringing moisture up into the soil from below the roots, so whatever you have growing in your planter gets watered from the bottom.

Your greenery stays greener because the plants stay healthier with consistent moisture. It won’t under-water, waste water or over-water. There’s an overflow port that’s drilled into the exterior of the planter to prevent overfilling, which protects your plants from drowning.

The plants will thrive because they only consume what they need. This decreases the chance for yellowing leaves, root rot and helps to prevent mold and fungus associated with over-watering.

Experience

Instead of having a plant-tender to check on your flowers, the plants can draw the water up on their own. When they need water, they drink. When they are saturated, the water stays in the reservoir.

People have told us that their 40-60 inch self-watering planters can go as long as 3 to 4 weeks before the reservoir needs more water.

Sound Investment

There’s a separate cost for these separate pieces but it cuts out the scheduled maintenance and hassle of having to worry about watering the plants. If the plants water themselves, it’s one less thing to worry about and one less “landscape technician” or weekly item on the schedule and the budget.

Installing self-watering planter systems can benefit all kinds of commercial clients: cities, nonprofits, municipalities and any customer looking to upgrade the look of the grounds, without the extra work or trouble.

Installation

The water-wicking system is a secondary piece that fits onto the bottom of any TerraCast® planter. Any TerraCast® resin planter can transform into a self-watering planter.

If you are purchasing your water-wicking system after you have already purchased your planter pots, don’t worry. The self-watering system is just as easy to install as the planters themselves. It comes with instructions or directions on how to set up the system, create the reservoir and hook up the water-wicking tube. The water-wicking system is just as easily built into a new installation. You don’t need an electrician, as there’s no power required. It’s completely water-powered, self-contained and sustainable. You don’t need plumbers, permits or eye-safety goggles either!

This is the easiest watering system you’ll ever have the pleasure of installing, owning and showing off.

We can custom fit a reservoir system for an odd-sized piece, although the cost associated with that may be prohibitive and so we usually recommend finding a size that we have in stock, unless you are making a large order for a corresponding custom planter order, in which case the size of the request would facilitate the custom water-wicking system order without being cost-prohibitive.

Exceptions

Self-watering planters are a futuristic, dynamic, and nifty idea in terms of ease and cutting costs. However, despite the super-green, eco friendly, happy plant factor, believe it or not, these fabulous items are not for everyone!

People who do not need self-watering planters, would include customers in areas like South Florida or Seattle, where lots of rain falls all year long. Even though there is an overflow port built into the system, in heavy rainfall areas, self-watering planters would be excessive, since the natural rainfall would be sufficient for the foliage there, and too much excess moisture can be detrimental to your precious petunias. So if you are in South Florida, Seattle, or another heavily watered area, you probably don’t need the self-watering accessory.
