Thru-Wall Structural Brick from Belden

Reinforced Structural Brick Masony is not a new wall system. Reinforcing steel and grout have been used with brick masonry for over 100 years. With brick masonry's high compressive strength, reinforcing makes for an economical, high-strength wall in comparison to other reinforced masonry systems.

Advantages of Thru-Wall Structural Brick

  • Greater design flexibility
  • Greater seismic resistance and more ductility.
  • Often lower construction cost
  • Reduced backup requirements
  • Less restrictive deflection requirments of the backup structure
  • Greater resistance to cracking
  • Reduced number of tie connections, which provides a more continuous moisture barrier
  • Reduced cost of the backup system
  • Fire resistant structure

Structural Brick vs. Concrete Masonry Units

  • Modest Loading
  • Wind at 20psf
  • Comparable Grout and Reinforcing
  • CMU f'm @ 1500 psi
  • Clay f'm @ 3500 psi
  • 350 8 x 4 x 16 CMU
  • 365 6 x 4 x 16 TTW Brick
From a cost comparison standpoint, we are comparing installed costs of various Reinforced Brick Masonry (RBM) and Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) single wythe systems. In comparing 6" TTW brick and 8" half high CMU, in a days time, a mason and tender will install approximately 350 CMU. In that same time, 365 brick would be installed. productivity differences are due to unit size and weight. Similar productivity differences by other size TTW Brick in corresponding size CMU are also seen.

About Belden Brick Company

The Belden Brick Company traces its roots to the Diebold Fire Brick Company organized in Canton, Ohio in 1885 by Henry S. Belden and four associates. The Belden Brick Company owns and operates six plants in Tuscarawas County, employs approximately 500 people and has an annual production capacity of nearly 250 million standard brick equivalent (sbe). Plant 3 and one line at Plant 8 produce soft mud (machine-molded) brick while the other facilities all produce extruded brick products.
